The Recommended 'Free' Personality Test (Online)

Updated: Oct 10, 2019

Hi Everyone!

It's been a very long time I haven't posted any articles here, I'm so sorry :(

Since I was in High School, I already took some real psychology tests, which for me is totally frustrating. Why? Because I have to deal with a gigantic paper with numbers (from 1 to 9) and sum every two numbers at a fast pace. Even though the psychology test goal is to get to know yourself, but if you hate the process, your result will be a catastrophe.

When I was in college, I found some personality tests online, such as Youthmanual and 16Personalities. And when I graduated from college, I found other personality tests, like The Four Tendencies and IKIGAI.

To know more about those online personality tests, check it out down below:

This test is more likely as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which has four scales of personalities (Extrovert or Introvert; Intuitive or Sensing; Thinking or Feeling; Judging or Percieving). But, in 16Personalities, they added up an extra scale, that is Identity (Turbulent or Assertive).

If the five independent spectrums are combined, it became like combining five different letters. For example, the test result is ENFP-T, which is Extraverted; Intuitive; Feeling; Perceiving; Turbulent. For detailed information about this result, you can go to their website.

Based on my experience, this website is beneficial for people who are still searching for their true dignity (well at least get to know themselves). I knew this website from one of my colleagues in Mirum Agency Indonesia, Wibi in mid-2017. So, I would like to say Thank you, big bro!

If you haven't tried any personality test yet, I recommend you to try The 16Personalities Test FIRST before you try anything else! :)

The 16 Personalities

Honestly, I found this test just recently after I watched a YouTube video from BukaTalks: Fellexandro Ruby - Seandainya Usia 20an Udah Tau Ini. In the middle of his talks, he said about IKIGAI, which is a Japanese concept that means a reason for being. The word Ikigai is usually used to indicate the source of value in one's life or the things that make one's life worthwhile.

For a more straightforward definition, take a look at this picture:

The IKIGAI Diagram

I have been searching for this test for a very long time because most of the test that I found back then was about Our True Personality (Only). It didn't tell us how we can relate to real-world needs or even real-world jobs. After I searched more about IKIGAI, I have founded the best and detailed explanation about the IKIGAI on Medium. Check out Melody Wilding's medium post.

Then, I tried the IKIGAI Test on http://ikigaitest.com/ in about 10 minutes.

How's The Result?

All I can say is "I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!".

Why?

Because It's So True and Related to Me as a Person, whether my Passion, Mission, Vocation, and Profession. I can't believe they can answer all of these questions:

  • What do you LOVE?

  • What are you GOOD AT?

  • What does the world NEED from you?

  • What can you get PAID for?

My Advice? Try IKIGAI TODAY! :D

It began with a book-searching in 2018 for myself because I was bored and wanted to learn about how to be a better person. I went to Books & Beyond, literally scanned all of the books on the shelf there, and suddenly found a book by Gretchen Rubin (The author of The Happiness Project) called Better Than Before. Without a doubt, I bought that book and read it until the end.

At the end of the book, there was a Quiz to figure out our Tendencies. So, based on Gretchen Rubin's book, she called it The Four Tendencies, such as Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, and Rebel.

The Four Tendencies Diagram

"Knowing our Tendency can help us set up situations in the ways that make it more likely that we’ll achieve our aims. We can make better decisions, meet deadlines, meet our promises to ourselves, suffer less stress, and engage more deeply with others." - Gretchen Rubin

It's different from the other two personality tests that I told you before. So, it's basically, knowing yourself in the form of how you meet expectations. Is it useful? ABSOLUTELY!

Youthmanual (Indonesian Only)

Okay, this is explicitly for Indonesian people. Why? Because all of the questions and website contents are in Bahasa Indonesia. So, I'm sorry my English friend :(

Mostly, they targeted on High School and College Students. Because a lot of students had no idea in choosing their major, even selecting a college that is a good fit for them.

Anyway, I tried the Youthmanual test when I was in my 5th Semester of College since I was still struggling to find my ideal job (Yeah, I know :P). Based on my experience, it was almost like the 16Personalities test, but what I love from Youthmanual is The Road Map.

"What is that?"

To make it easier, take a look at this picture:

Screenshot of My Youthmanual Road Map

The translation:

  1. Introduction (Pengenalan Diri)

  2. Personality Module (Modul Kepribadian): It's almost like the 16Personalities, but they only use the first four letters.

  3. Interest Module (Modul Minat): It is a useful module if you don't know or not sure what are you interested in.

  4. Learning Style (Gaya Belajar): This is the A-Must-Do module if you are in school or college. Because the key to Survive in School/College (in the academic form) is knowing your learning style. Keep in mind that everybody has a different learning style! So, don't forget to find out yours!

  5. Ability Module (Modul Kemampuan): If you have tried the Official Psychology Test somewhere, more or less, this module is similar to it. You basically should know your potential (what are you good at and what's not) to choose the best college major for you. So, Good Luck!

  6. Personal Values: This module figures out the things that are most important to us. This value is the formation of the norms, education, and teaching that we have received since childhood.

  7. Profession Exploration (Eksplorasi Profesi): After you've done all the six modules above, you will see the Degree of Fit of The Profession based on your Interest and Potential. It helped me so much in searching for my ideal job. So, don't hesitate to upgrade to the paid plan, because it's worth it!

  8. Create My CV (Buat CV-ku)

  9. Ask Youthmanual (Tanya Youthmanual)

If you understand Bahasa Indonesia and you want to know your ideal job, don't forget to try Youthmanual.com (For Free or Paid)!

Conclusion

Based on my experience, there's no such thing as a perfect personality test. You cannot define who you really are in one test. If the time or the environment is changing, there's still a possibility that you are changing too. That's why some of them said that you can't try the same test again in the same six-month range. I hope this post will help you to get to know yourself and know your purpose.

Good luck and see you in the next post! :)
